TYPES OF ACNE?

We've all heard about acne, but do we know what it's all about?

Updated 06/14/16

There are two main types of acne

Acne shouldn't be a reason to avoid that selfie opp. Just play "Name That Zit" to find out what's going on so you can pinpoint the problem and take action to banish breakouts.

CliffsNotes: There are two main types of acne

  • Non-inflammatory, mild to moderate: whiteheads and blackheads
  • Inflammatory, moderate to severe: papules, pustules, nodules and cysts

The main difference between the two is that non-inflammatory acne is not red or painful because your body hasn't done battle against the infection yet. Inflammatory acne is red and swollen and may stay put, which means you might need to consult a professional.

What is It What Causes It Where It Shows Up What it Looks Like
Whiteheads These are pimples that stay under the surface of the skin. Whiteheads form when your pores get clogged. Because they're not exposed to the air, they're white. Whiteheads pop up on the face but may also appear on your chest.
Blackheads These pimples rise to the skin's surface and look black. But don't be fooled by the color - it's not dirt. Blackheads form when clogged pores are exposed to air. T-Zone, but they can show up wherever you have a lot of face or body peach fuzz.
Papules These are small pink or red bumps that can be tender if touched. Papules occur as a result of oil and bacteria trapped in your pores. Any area of your body where you have a little extra hair.
Pustules These painful zits are red on bottom and yellow or white pus on top. Pustules occur as a result of a pore infection. Commonly found on the face, neck and back.
Nodules These are large, painful and/or solid pimples that are deep in the skin. Nodules occur as a result of a severe pore infection and usually require professional treatment. You'll find them on the face, neck and back.
Cysts These painful, pus-filled pimples that form deep under the skin can cause scars. Cysts occur as a result of a severe pore infection underneath your skin and usually require pro treatment. They also develop on the face, neck and back.
